Rediculous and Real – Answers to Perplexing Questions

Question: Where do socks go after you put them into the dryer?

Rediculous: Its no secret that under the right circumstances the rotating mechanism used in the common dryer creates a very intense electromagnetic field. Coupled with the fact that rubbing fabric together for long periods of time will create static electricity, the charge in the middle of the dryer often hits critical levels. In more than 80% of cases, the center of the dryer becomes a poor-mans time machine, capable of transporting any object that comes into contact with the center of the ‘time vortex’ to an unknown time in either the past or the future. Although never observed directly, such time vortexes have been hypothesized in papers such as the famous ‘Study of Black Socks in a Dryer for one Day’ published in the fall of 1987.

Raving Rambo Review!

I was able to check out Rambo a day early yesterday courtesy of John Bollwitt (Thanks Buddy). Okay, lets get a few things out of the way.

Anyone can appreciate an awesome movie, but to appreciate a sequel 22 years in the making you have to acknowledge a few things.

1) It’s probably going to suck (In terms of movie-epic-ness)

2) The actors will be older – There’s only so much ‘movie magic’ can do

3) It will be bloody. Bloody good.

4) You’re older too and therefore more judgemental

5) You must suspend your disbelief

I followed my own advice and went in to the theatre with honest expectations. So what do I think?

Rambo

Fucking

Rocks

Sylvester Stallone makes absolutely no apologies. This movie is terribly awesome, with people being gutted, heads being blown off, people being blown up by landmines, ancient unrealistic bombs and jeep-mounted machine guns. Yes people.

Bask in all it’s glory gore and appreciate Rambo for what it is – A cheesy bloody action movie.

My Favourite One Liner

There are several methods of tracking down disk usage using the ‘find’ utility, however I really like ‘du’ for giving me a quick overall sample. Because ‘du’ prints all the files and their sizes its not very convenient to use on its own, however if you pipe it into another command it completes its job *much* faster. Combined with some other shell tricks and tools you can quickly find the size of folders in your working directory.

for i in `ls`; do du $i | tail -n 1 ; done | sort -n

JJ Abrams at TED

I have a preconceived notion that every hyperintelligent, creative and worthy person will one day be invited to the TED conference. I hope to one day be lucky enough to go. As I was perusing the site today, I stumbled upon something rather unexpected.

Last year JJ Abrams presented at TED

JJ Abrams has created a couple of my favourite television shows. I was a fan of Alias since day one, and was captivated by the first season of Lost. I’ve since stopped watching TV, but JJ Abrams always stuck out as someone who mastered suspense, and the art of the ever increasing and overlapping plot line. Despite my occasional disdain for his lack of closure, JJ Abrams is a genius in his own right. His TED presentation is rather interesting, and made me reflect on a few people from my past who have had a similar affect on my life. *Awww*
